AT: Thank you for taking the time to talk with us and for your long involvement with SCCE. What led you into the world of compliance?
AA: This is a very good question. I was very fortunate to have the complete support of my company in my professional career. I initially was employed as an in-house lawyer, but was always encouraged to explore new avenues.
I could see that the area of compliance would not only develop my skills and strategies, but would enable me to build trust with all stakeholders.
In 2011, PTT Global Chemical PLC honored me by appointing me to be the first corporate compliance officer for the company, and I am, of course, very grateful to have been given such an opportunity to contribute to the compliance and ethics policies of the company.
AT: We first met back in 2012 when you came to the SCCE Basic Compliance & Ethics Academy in Shanghai. I think that was our first academy in Asia. How did you come to learn about SCCE?
AA: I do indeed remember the academy in Shanghai. I was aware that my company needed to comply with all requirements and regulations to best serve our employees, our customers, our suppliers, our investors, and the general public. Compliance for the company, especially given we work in the natural resources field (oil and gas), is at the very core of what we do.
I became aware that SCCE would be able to provide me with information and support in my compliance/ethics role, and through membership, I would be able to make connections with other professionals working in the area.
The first academy I attended (the one in Shanghai) was a most fulfilling and useful experience. I was motivated by the speakers and excited by the lectures and programs.
The fact that the academy was in Shanghai was helpful, as it gave extra focus to my area, Southeast Asia.
Since then, I continually use the resources on SCCE’s website, which has always been (and especially since COVID-19) a most powerful resource.
AT: What made you decide to attend an academy?
AA: I decided to attend the academy to expand my personal and professional capabilities, as I had become aware of the usefulness and necessity of a corporate compliance program. The knowledge I gained also allowed me to develop and lead internal corporate compliance and ethics classes and training programs.
