A case proceeding through the courts in London may have great ramifications for the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and for corruption investigations.
Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC), a metals and mining company with assets in Central Asia and Africa, was controlled by three oligarchs and the Kazakh government when it listed for a short time on the London Stock Exchange. An international law firm was retained to conduct an internal investigation in response to a whistleblower report and then to represent the company in dealings with the SFO. In 2013, the SFO announced its investigation into subsidiaries in Kazakhstan and Africa, though it has yet to bring charges.
