Artists have always borrowed from each other in composition and technique, and during the High Renaissance, artists tried to disguise this creative borrowing whenever possible. Raphael, for example, was a master of such borrowing, because while some artists became famous for their own innovations, Raphael’s popularity came from taking other artists’ innovations and combining them in his own way.
