Lest ye in ambulatory care feel left out of the ASP fun…

According to published results from a 2018 study of primary care clinics within a Veterans Affairs healthcare system, as many as 76% of antibiotic prescriptions were inappropriate.[1] No antibiotic was indicated in approximately 50% of the reviewed cases, and the remainder of the cases were found to be nonadherent to guidance on either the type of antibiotic prescribed, duration of antibiotic prescribed, or both. Of the reviewed cases, drugs prescribed for the indications of acute respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, and skin and soft tissue infection accounted for 67% of the total.
