The number of breaches affecting 500 or more people continues to rise, said Yun-kyung Lee, deputy regional manager in the Pacific region of the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR), at the Health Care Compliance Association’s Compliance Institute March 29.[1] The types of breaches have shifted dramatically in recent years, as shown below. Curiously, while ransomware attacks plague the health care industry, fewer hacking/information technology incidents reported to OCR were attributed to ransomware in 2021 than in 2020.
