The cooperation between A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S, the Danish shipping conglomerate, and IBM to create a blockchain solution for the shipping industry has added another member: ZIM Integrated Shipping Service, an Israeli shipping company. The solution, TradeLens, has recorded more than five million shipments by more than 60 network members and 100 total ecosystem members since its inception last year.
“The addition of ZIM to TradeLens shows exactly why we worked with Maersk to create this solution,” said Daniel Melka, country general manager, IBM Israel. Melka went on to say that “blockchain networks like TradeLens work best” when composed of a diverse network of participants who work together to effect change “for an entire industry, which is what we are seeing happen with TradeLens.”
In related news, JPMorgan Chase & Co. teamed up with Microsoft Corp. to deliver a blockchain platform that makes it easier for entrepreneurs to create their own blockchain solutions. The platform, Quorum, will work with Microsoft’s cloud-based service, Azure, to provide developers with the tools and code to create blockchain platforms quickly and cheaply. Without access to simplified tools and “out of the box” code, building platforms can take many weeks and cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.
