Aetna Inc. has agreed to pay California $935,000 to settle a case involving allegations that the insurer violated California privacy laws by revealing a botched 2017 mailing that 1,991 Californians were taking HIV-related medication.
“A person’s HIV status is incredibly sensitive information, and protecting that information must be a top priority for the entire health care industry,” said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra in announcing the settlement. “Aetna violated the public’s trust by revealing patients’ private and personal medical information.”
